What is Cosentyx?

Cosentyx is a prescription drug used to treat various types of psoriasis, mainly in adult patients.

What is Cosentyx used for?

Cosentyx is used to treat various types of psoriasis, including psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis, and ankylosing spondylitis. 

How does Cosentyx work?

Cosentyx is a human antibody that binds to the interleukin-17A cytokine, a cytokine that is pro-inflammatory. Cosentyx inhibits this cytokine to work with the IL-17 receptor. In short, Cosentyx helps inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines from being released.

How long does it take Cosentyx to work?

The length of time it takes for Cosentyx to feel effective will differ for each individual. In most cases, Cosentyx is injected once per week for up to four weeks, then altered based on the individual’s symptoms, if they persist or worsen. While some patients may feel the effects of Cosentyx after a few injections, others may need their dosage increased to feel the effects.

Do not use Cosentyx if:

There are some cases, according to the FDA,  in which a person should not use Cosentyx, including but not limited to:

  • If you have an infection or are being treated for an infection
  • If you have a persistent infection that will not go away or keeps returning
  • If you have TB or have been in close contact with someone who has TB
  • If you believe you might have an infection, which could be shown through various symptoms including: fever, rashes or sores, chills, sweats, weight change, gastrointestinal problems, muscle pain, cough, blood in your phlegm
  • Hypersensitivity to secukinumab
