What Is A Lip Flip?
A lip flip is a relatively new yet popular cosmetic procedure that makes your lips look fuller without increasing their volume. It involves injecting the neurotoxin Botox into the upper lip and gives a person fuller lips with one quick and straightforward treatment. People sometimes refer to it as a “lip injection.”
The Botox injection relaxes the muscles above the lip, resulting in the upper lip “pouting” slightly upward. Although the procedure makes the lip look more prominent, it does not increase the size of the lip itself.
People who get lip flips do it for a variety of reasons, such as:
- Boosting one’s confidence and self-esteem – Many, if not most, people who seek lip flips get them to boost their confidence by making their lips look fuller and more appealing. Factors like genetics, smoking, and sun damage may cause the lips to thin.
- Covering the gums – Lip flips are ideal for individuals with smiles exposing much of their gums. After the procedure, less gum shows when one smiles because the upper lip elevates less.
- Reducing the effects of aging – As a person ages, their lips may get smaller or thinner. The philtrum (the midline groove between the upper lip and nose) tends to flatten, and the distance between the corners of your mouth may increase. The Botox relaxes your muscles, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles when you make facial expressions.
Lip Flip Before And After Pictures & Videos
To help you an idea of what to expect, here are some before and after pics and videos from people across social media who’ve had lip flips, which have been their experiences so far…
Sierra Bolen (@sierrabolen)
Fashion model Sierra Bolen shared her before and after lip flip progress on her Tiktok. As seen in the video, she already noticed changes in her lips just 48 hours after the procedure. After a week, we see that it has fully taken effect.
Despite saying that the procedure hurt for a bit, Sierra has no regrets and even recommends having one “100%” (Promise not to tell her mom about the lip flip, though)
Prior to getting a lip flip, Tay had always hated her rather “gummy” grin. Days after her procedure, she noted her lips gradually taking their pouty form — just by the third day, her gums were already barely visible as she smiled.
With her lips delightfully pouted and less-gummy beam, she’s definitely digging the newfound confidence it gives her.
Hannah Vance (Habits And Vitals)
Kansas-based lifestyle vlogger Hannah Vance said she tended to lose her upper lip whenever she smiled. She sought a lip flip treatment to rectify it since she didn’t want to opt for lip fillers because she already had full lips.
She said drinking out of straws felt weird for the first few days following the initial injection, but she eventually got used to it and didn’t feel anything more afterward. She’s definitely satisfied with the results and will even plan on getting one again in the future.
Brooke Taylor (@brooke.tays)
If most lip flip results show a highlighted or distinguishable pout, Tiktok user Brooke Taylor’s post-injection lips show a more subtle result, but is she dissatisfied? Far from it, in fact, she’s rocking them quite well!
How The Lip Flip Procedure Works
If you’re looking to qualify for a lip flip, you should be in good physical and mental health, have realistic expectations, and not have an active oral infection such as canker or cold sores.
Compared to dermal filler, lip flip procedures aren’t invasive, so the physician in charge won’t need to numb the lips — although you can request a numbing agent (cream or gel) if you’re afraid of needles.
The physician will use a thin needle to inject Botox in parts of the upper lip, the corners of the mouth, and the edges of the lips. One might feel a little pain, and your eyes may water. On average, they will insert about two to four units of Botox into the upper lip and two units into the lower one.
The procedure is relatively fast and should only take 10 to 20 minutes. A cotton swab is usually applied immediately on the injection sites to absorb any dots of blood.
It takes about one week for the lips to look fuller. Suppose you want your lips to look fuller before a big event, like a wedding; you should schedule the procedure for at least two weeks before to make sure that the Botox has fully set in and that you’ve completely recovered from the procedure.
Most dermatologists say a lip flip typically lasts between two to five months.
Immediately after the procedure, the physician will monitor you for the following side effects:
- Allergic reactions
- Substantial bleeding
If you’re experiencing swelling or numbing, apply an ice pack for up to 10 minutes to reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling.
Experiencing these symptoms is fairly normal and usually goes away within 24 hours. In the meantime, it’s important to not put pressure on your lips for at least 4 days; this includes touching, puckering, kissing, applying lipstick/gloss, sleeping face down, and sipping from a straw.
Having full pouty lips can make a huge difference in your overall look, especially your smile, and give you a tremendous boost in confidence. Lip flip procedures help you achieve all of that without being too invasive.
Discuss with a trusted physician that specializes in lip flips to discuss your options. To maintain these lips, you’ll need lip flips every after 2 or 5 months.
