Aretaeus the Cappadocian may have been the first to record appendicitis in 30 AD. However, it wasn’t until 1521 that Anatomist Berengario da Carpi first described the appendix. As for appendix-related surgeries, Claudius Amyand performed the first appendectomy in 1735. Finally, pathologist-physician Reginald Fitz named the appendix during a public lecture in 1886.
