Mewing is a TikTok trend that has blown up in the last few months. It is claimed that it can help shape your jawline as well as cure other ailments by actively pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth and in turn, improving your ‘jaw posture’.

We have scoured the internet and collected some of the best mewing before and after photos to see just how legit this trend really is.

Her cheekbones and jawline are much more defined and apparent now, but she says she’s still practicing the technique to get further results.

What Is Mewing?

Mewing is a do-it-yourself facial restructuring technique involving tongue placement that has recently garnered attention all over social media.

The term “mewing” comes from the name of a British orthodontist named John Mew; he and his son, Michael, also an orthodontist by profession, came up with a form of orthodontics that involves repositioning the tongue, which will eventually change your overall facial features, most notably the jawline.

The basic idea behind mewing is changing the placement of one’s tongue in the mouth can change and improve the shape of the jawline and the alignment of the chin and hose. Others have also claimed that it can help with conditions like sleep apnea, sinusitis, and breathing problems.

How To Mew

Mewing is simply repositioning the tongue into a new resting place. Supporters of the technique believe that, over time, your tongue position will change your overall facial features, especially the jawline.

Instructions:

  • Close your lips.
  • Move your jaw, so the front bottom teeth go behind the front upper teeth.
  • Relax your tongue and make sure it covers the roof of your mouth
  • Place the tip of your tongue right behind your front teeth without touching.

Their recommended routine is 20 to 30 minutes daily.

Nothing New About Mew?

While the exercises seem to have exploded on social media, the concept of “mewing” itself isn’t technically new. Proper tongue alignment can subtly affect your cheekbones or facial structure. British dentist Dr. Ron Baise explains that the narrowing of the palate that comes from improper tongue posture can reduce the amount of support for your jaw and cheekbones. As a result, making the chin and cheekbones less prominent over time.

Does It Really Work?

While it’s an increasingly popular technique on social media sites, there is currently no scientific evidence to support it as an alternative therapy to jaw surgery or other scientifically backed face shaping methods.

Most testimonials for the benefits of mewing only come from social media users with no medical expertise. Many of them are adolescents whose faces and jawlines are likely to change naturally over puberty rather than due to this technique. It’s also notable that most claimants also say that they’ve paired mewing with physical exercise to lose weight, which mewing naysayers believe is the cause for the results.

At any rate, further research and testing are still needed to establish and solidify the claims of mewing’s efficacy.

Better Alternatives

Given mewing’s lack of scientific backing, it may be best to opt for other face shaping methods, such as orthodontics, surgery, or facial contouring, which have more scientific evidence to support them and may be more effective.

Spotlight Oral Care co-founder Dr. Lisa Creaven says that the effects of mewing only act as a temporary fix, not a long-term one, and believes that orthodontic measures to straighten the teeth, align the jaw, and reshape the face are far more effective.

Jaw surgery can help people with misaligned jaws (malocclusion) to realign the upper and lower jaws by moving one or both backward or forward into a more aligned position. Facial contouring is also done to alter the shape of the jawline, chin, and cheeks.

Wearing dental braces can also help with jaw alignment and facial asymmetry. Braces straighten the teeth and improve jaw alignment, which can fix the jaw’s shape and restore a face’s symmetry.

Takeaway

Mewing is a technique that involves placing the tongue on the roof of the mouth, which will allegedly reshape the jaw over time, according to its proponents.

Although various anecdotal reports suggest that it works, there is still no sufficient scientific evidence to prove that mewing is an effective technique for reshaping the face; ergo, further research is needed to affirm its efficacy.

If you’re considering facial reshaping or realigning your jaw for cosmetic or medical reasons, it’s best to consult a doctor to discuss various treatment options that can yield optimal results.
