Side Effects
Topamax and alcohol can both cause similar side effects, such as drowsiness and confusion. Taking Topamax and drinking alcohol concomitantly may cause these side effects to become more severe.
Interactions
The use of Topamax and alcohol consumption may lead to increased drowsiness, confusion, problems with memory, and problems with speech. Individuals who take Topamax should discuss these risks with their doctor and avoid driving or doing other activities that may be dangerous while experiencing drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired cognition, such as problems with decision making or judgment.
Contraindications: For the extended release version of topiramate patients should not consume alcohol within 6 hours before and after taking the medication.
