Below are the general guidelines for dosing naproxen. Note that these dosages may be adjusted on a case-by-case basis for individual patients. Always follow your prescribing physician’s instructions for taking naproxen.

The following information comes from DailyMed, an FDA label information provider.

What if I miss a dose of Naproxen?

If you miss a dose of naproxen, take it as soon as possible, unless you are closer to your next day’s dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and wait until the next one. Naproxen is sometimes an “as needed” medication in which case it is okay not to take the medication every single day. It is important to follow your physicians instructions.

What if I overdose on Naproxen?

If you have overdosed on naproxen, call for medical help immediately. Overdosing on naproxen can result in several symptoms including:

  • fatigue
  • drowsiness
  • upset stomach
  • heartburn
  • nausea and vomiting
  • loss of consciousness
  • stomach bleeding

In rare cases, an overdose can cause:

  • dangerous allergic reactions
  • high blood pressure
  • kidney failure
  • trouble breathing
  • coma

If you think you’ve taken too much of this drug, call your doctor or local poison control center. If your symptoms are severe, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away.

How is Naproxen administered?

The recommended starting dose of naproxen is 500 mg (20 mL), followed by 250 mg (10 mL) every 6 to 8 hours as required. The total daily dose should not exceed 1250 mg (50 mL). The “mL” are dependent upon the specific manufacturer. Always double check the dosing on the side of the bottle for accurate dosage and to prevent overdose. Many physicians will recommend alternative dosing. (Ex. 500 mg twice a day)

It may be taken with food or milk to help with gastrointestinal side effects.
