Serious interactions between Xanax and alcohol can occur.

Side Effects

The major side effects of mixing alcohol with Xanax (alprazolam) include over-sedation (excessive fatigue and sleepiness), respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, and loss of consciousness.

Interactions

Xanax is generally seen as a safe medication when taken correctly. However, that all changes when mixed with other chemicals like alcohol. These interactions occur because both alcohol and Xanax depress the central nervous system, which is why they give a sedative effect. When combined, that effect doubles, which could lead to unconsciousness, respiratory depression, and cardiac arrest.
