Is clindamycin a penicillin? Actually, it’s not. This fact is helpful, because while penicillin is a popular class of antibiotics, it can cause serious allergic reactions in some people. However, your doctor may decide that penicillin is a more appropriate antibiotic for your health needs, especially if you are allergic to clindamycin or if you’re struggling with a certain type of infection, such as a tooth infection.

Dosage

Amoxicillin is one of the most popular types of penicillin. Dosage varies considerably, but when used to treat bacterial infections in adults, teenagers, and children weighing at least 88 pounds, the typical dose is 250 to 500 mg every eight hours, or 500 to 875 mg every twelve hours.

Side Effects

The side effects of penicillins are similar to clindamycin. They can include digestive upset (nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, etc.), skin rash, itching, hives, and, in rare cases, the appearance of a black “hairy” tongue.
